Georges Bataille (1897-1962) has been part of crucial philosophical and theoretical discussions for almost a century. Discussing during his life surrealism with Breton, existentialism with Sartre, and materialism with Marxists, after his death Foucault emphasized his madness, Derrida his sovereignty, Blanchot his poetics, Kristeva his eroticism and Habermas his role for the discourse of postmodernity.

Today, his general economy is recognized both in relation to economics and more recently in ecology, Earth system science and Gaia Theory.

The presenters at the seminar are all longtime readers of Bataille, who present their particular perspectives and interests.

The seminar will be in English and is open to the public.
