The seminar will discuss the role of playfulness and imagination in achieving an active relationship with our lived contexts, and explore how this is particularly key in the spaces of higher education.

Playfulness and imagination is offered as an alternative vocabulary and framework to the discourse of knowledge production, entrepreneurial universities and creative economies surrounding higher education in recent years. Within this logic, ‘creativity’ and ‘imagination’ has sadly become integral to the discourse of productivity and competitive advantage, rather than about envisioning systemic change or new possible futures.

In this talk we will explore how an imaginative, divergent, and playful university could engage living communities in ecological thinking, and how HE educators carry within them the potential of co-designing playful imaginative spaces for and with learners, moving HE away from disciplining, instrumental conditions and towards partnerships for imagining possible alternative futures.
