Digital literacy in Higher Education: a moving landscape

Inspired by a current project STAK (Students’ digital academic literacies), our talk proposes examples of tools and practices for knowledge work that require new literacies, redefine old ones or challenge the notion of competence as individual ability. We will discuss how ‘learning ecologies’ (Luckin, 2010) based on digital resources may require competences like e.g. ‘lateral reading’ (Wineburg & McGrew, 2017), ‘infrastructural meaning-making’ (Haider & Sundin, 2019), data literacy (Wolff et al. 2016). Changes in the tools for knowledge work may involve becoming able to learn across paradigms, communicating with professionals with complementary disciplinary backgrounds, and also mastering non-trivial operational skills. This changing landscape entails challenges and risks, but also opportunities for new solutions and collaborations.
